The Denver Post reports that based on a study by the Violence Policy Center in Washington DC, Colorado is one of only ten states where more people are killed by guns than in car crashes. The study shows that in 2009, the most recent year for which data is available, nationwide there were slightly more deaths in car accidents than by guns, but here in Colorado, as well as nine other states, that is reversed. What some people may find disturbing about this is that car ownership is far more prevalent than gun ownership.
Have you been charged with a crime that includes weapons charges? Speak with an experienced Boulder criminal defense lawyer immediately to protect your rights.
The use of a gun during the commission of a crime makes the charges significantly more serious, and the penalties more severe. This even applies to the threat of a gun, saying you have one when you don't, if that threat is credible at the time. Of course, any study involving the prevalence of gun violence can become political, and some people who advocate for the rights of gun owners question the legitimacy of the study. Regardless, if you have been charged with a crime, and accused of using a gun while committing that crime, your future is very much at stake.
